Who is Gothic Girl?
As I continue to play internet chess games it seems to amaze me more and more every time I make a move on the board. At the moment, one of the main sites I play at is the GameKnot site, only because I was not aware of all the free sites that were available on the internet at the time. One of the things I noticed was that my OTB chess was getting better, but I also realized that I probably have played more recorded games on the internet than OTB recorded games. Not only were the games recorded but they were also in a downloadable database.
So it got me curious, and I started to search to see who had the most games played at GameKnot, and a few other sites. To my amazement there were 24 players with 5000 games or more at GameKnot, but Gothic Girl! Has out played them all with 17735 games in her database to date.
Her rating jumps up and down like many players at GameKnot, but I believe this mainly due to fast play. At any given time Gothic Girl is playing 200 games at once, and I have no idea if she plays at any other sites.
From the data that I have, tells me that she completes about 12 games a day. At 5 minutes per game that's a minimum of 2 hours a day of chess. At 10minsPG/4 hours a day/At 20minsPG/8hours a day At 40minsPG/ 16 hours a day Her rating has been in the high 1815 as far as I could tell. (Searching her database can be a mind maze) This of course is just her internet rating, with fast playing times, and with slower play I'm betting that Gothic Girl's OTB rating could be as high as 1800 to 2200, which would mean that she could play chess full time.
I have contacted her and asked a few general questions, and she has told me a few things in chat, but to date she has not answered the list of questions I sent, so I have decided to write a two part article on this peculiar player. Hopefully she will answer soon, and tell us in her own words why she plays so much chess, I think you will be quite surprised at what she has to say about the game of chess and what it has done for her.
You do not have to be a great chess player to enjoy the game of chess. Gothic Girl has 8487 wins on record, that's a lot of enjoyment. I've played her a total of five times and she has won 4 games so far, and one game is still in progress, I think I'm winning, I think yikes! :) />
The next closest player to Gothic Girl is Larsof54 with 13700, compared to my 493 complete games these people are giants. They play almost night and day, and will take on anybody with any rating, and are not afraid to win or lose. It's these kind of players that really make chess exciting, because of their willingness to play anyone. As far as I can tell they do not have time to consult a database for the next move, they play on intuition, knowledge of the game, they experiment, and play some of the wildest games I've ever seen. Certainly, or possibly a prelude to OTB chess.
There are a few players on the internet that have made their marks around the other chess sites, Like Nyxie, another prolific chess player, but without an interview, it's unknown if all the sites that list that player is the same person.
I have asked myself how is it possible to play so many games and not be become a master at the game. One would think that after playing you're 1st 5000 or so games you would be a master. Only one of the questions I asked Gothic Girl. But I guess some players will just never become masters, and others will. So is the amount of games that one plays, the study and knowledge of the game, or pure genius, that makes a chess master? A question that is still being asked today by all walks of science.
We could argue all the different aspects as to what makes a chess master player, but more than anything it's the human willpower to achieve and solve the unknowable. Just one of Gothic Girl's Games It's hard to tell what is going on in the game, without the players commenting, one of the reasons players, should always go over their games. But I did not analyze this game at all, I simply searched a game that Gothic Girl won against the highest rated player I could find in her database of over 18,000 games. Why the database list more games than here stats say she has played, I do not know... But I also would have had a hard time deciding witch one or even two of the 18000 games would have been best... ; ) (17469) swingmaster68 (1942) - gothicgirl (1552) Challenge from swingmaster68 http://gameknot.com/chess.pl?b , 16.12.2006 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Bc5 5.Nxc6 bxc6 6.Be3 Bxe3 7.fxe3 Qf6 8.c3 Ne7 9.Nd2 0–0 10.Bc4 d5 11.exd5 cxd5 12.Bd3 c5 13.e4 Bb7 14.Qb3 Rab8 15.Rf1 Qh4+ 16.g3 Qxh2 17.0–0–0 c4 18.Nxc4 dxc4 19.Bxc4 Bd5 20.Qa3 Bxc4 21.Rd2 Qh6 22.Rff2 Nc6 23.Qd6 Qxd6 24.Rxd6 Ne5 25.Kc2 Be6 26.b3 Rfd8 27.Rfd2 Rxd6 0–1

I'm, er, kind of confused about why you're writing long articles here about somebody who plays chess on a different server. Also, I do hope you've made it clear in your E-mails to Gothic Girl that you intend to make her responses public.
As for the game you posted, GG plays reasonably well but the standard of the game is pretty low. GG's opponent, despite his high-looking rating, makes some pretty terrible moves: 6.Be3? 10.Bc4?! 13.e4? (get your king safe, man!) and 17.O-O-O?? (dropping a piece to an obvious pawn fork).
