"Checkmate ends the game – that’s an undeniable fact. Yet one sometimes gains the impression that players who gleefully and unashamedly play for the attack are treated as a joke by their colleagues. Launching a successful attack is a skillful business that often demands great creativity." - http://www.wholesalechess.com/chess/chess_software/PowerPlay2+Attacking+the+King
I must say that I am guilty for thinking it is a joke to attack the king, I mean why attack the king (unless of course it is the objectively best course of action, which it never is if the opponent doesnt blunder) Its just that too many pieces are concentrated on one task, leaving the squares NOT near the king horribly vacant as a rule, and the fact of the matter that king defenses turn out to be more successful for an endgame (as the attacking side gains space and pieces are traded the defender gains an advantage usually) What are your opinions on king attacks? No-go unless something tangable occurs or wait until it's safe? Personally priority should go to exploiting the most relvant weakness while nullifying our own, and if that greatest weakness happens to be near the opponent king THEN attack the king, but otherwise no is my stand.
