After three years of inactivity in OTB (over the board)chess, I shall start again the competition today. Do you remeber your recent performance in OTB? Did you finish first? Win a prize? Did your rating climbed or dropped? And ultimately, do you think you stand better in Correspondance chess or in OTB? I open the topic, feel free to share your comment. :-)

When I was at OTB of the dancing floor, I was doing great with my lady partner. We were showing our rival how to dance the chacha, salsa (mambo), merengue, jive (lindy, bogie), tango, foxtrot, rumba, samba and other ballroom dance. I though I won the the competition but they said it was an exhibition between us and the other couple. So, nobody won but they gave us prize money. Our rating was the same. And we really want to stay in the dancing floor. Oh, I'm sorry, you were asking chess...
Okay, I have not play at the over the board chess yet. I don't know what that means because I don't know the whole chess. I just play chess for fun only and to meet more friends.

I had a lousy rating in OTB. Then I started playing online and was even worse, as it took a while to get used to the 2-dimensional view. Then I didn't play OTB for a long time. Finally started again a year or so ago, expecting to do great, since my rating online is much higher than my OTB had been. NO! I did worse! Now I can't seem to get used to playing 3-dimensional OTB! This old age stuff is for the birds!

Hi yesterday I finished an OTB tournament. After 3 years of playing only on internet. Well it didn't go well - the problem was not the number of dimensions or remembering about pressing the clock. Instead I have made several horrible blunders and I was lacking time in almost every game. If you ask me about the rankings - I'm a category III player in Poland, which means that as long as I don't have FIDE Elo I'm classified as 1600 for the purpose of calculating national category norms. My rating performance was a sad 1400, I have made 50% (3+,2=,3-). Fortunately they do not revoke categories in Poland ;-)

Twenty-five years ago, I had to leave my chess-club due to irregular working hours. For many years I played chess very occasionally. Last 7 years, because I got my own restaurant, I played more often with friends or guests. And from time to time I visited the local ChessCafe, playin blitz, 5-20 min.max. For one year, I play correspondence chess.
This season I joined the local chessclub, and my experience is that I didn,t loose my skills. In contrast with Inaki, I don,t blunder at OTB chess in contrary to correspondence chess. I can concentrate myself better on one game OTB then lots of different positions on the screen, which I play far too fast.
Well, competition is almost halfway and I am 6/8th. at the moment from the 56 members, so I am more then satisfied. If I reach my Elo from way back, I don,t know yet.
But what I did notice is, that my blitz has improved a lot, due to correspondence chess. I play a lot online games, 5/10/15 min. on other sites. At the New Years blitz tournament, 10 min./game, I got a surprising 3th.spot.
This year I intend to force myself to take more time before making any move in correspondence chess, with less ongoing games.

Last year I played 2 tournaments (OTB) after more then 15 years of inactivity.

April/2007
Rapid tournament (21 min) - Swiss 6 rounds
5,0/6 (+4=2-0) 3th place!

October/2007
State Championship qualifying - Swiss 6 rounds (65 min)- Much stronger tournament.
3,0/6 (+2=2-2) - 16th place

I feel much better playing OTB chess. Since there is no chess club in my town it's hard to improve... and I'm getting older.:)
