"One of the most atrocious puns in chess history"
Bu Xiangzhi of China is 22 years. He became GM when he was 13 years, 10 months, 13 days, which made him the younghest GM in history at the time, ultrapassing former World Champion Ponomaryov of the Ucraine. After 8 of the 10 rounds of the 6th.Gibtel Chess Festival in Gibraltar, Bu was leading, on February 3th. with 7.5/8 and a Elo 3022 performance. Unfortunally, in the last two rounds, he could not hold on to it, and establish an absolute New World Record. In round 9 he lost, and was caught by Zahar Efimenko. But the Ucrainian GM was beaten by America`s Hikaru Nakamura, in the final round, while Bu draw with his landsman Ni Hua. A rapid chess tie-breaker was played, and it was the American who had the better nerves; 0-2.
"It always happens doesn`t it?" writes John Saunders in the official bulletin. "You laud a player to the skies, and he promply loses, after my report, Bu Xiangzhi was trampled by Ucranian GM Efimenko. My apologies to him, for putting up the kiss of death on him"
