Study the chess opening, middle, end game and practice, practice, practice with no cheating because you can not learn from cheating.

Have a plan!
The weaker player tends to move his pieces almost randomly and according to whim.
If the move you're about to make is not part of a plan, however simple, then you shouldn't be making it.
