can you castle if your rook is in jeaopy of being captured?

Yes ... but often the squares the king will cross will be covered too. So assume White's king e1, Rook h1, pawns f3 g2 h3. A black knight on g3 stops castling. But if Black pawn on g3 and knight on f2 then White can castle.
