Yes tablebases are against the rules. You can get them but they occupy gobs and gobs of space on your computer. The best thing is to use the online endgame tablebase found on site for the Shredder chess engine. You can set up any ending with (I think) 6 pieces or less and it will show you the outcome of every move.
