Hello,

I have a position where, clearly, Black has an advantage. In fact, White has a trapped bishop, and it's not so easy to see how he will get out of it. Basically, White is playing a piece down right in the opening.

I submitted the position to both The King (Chessmaster engine) and Toga II, and none of them seem to care (the lowest evaluation I have seen is -0.19, which is in my opinion a pretty ridiculous evaluation given the nature of the position).

Out of curiosity, I've had Chessmaster Grandmaster personalities play the game from that point on, and out of the 5 games that were played, the whole lot was won by Black (a whopping 0-5!), which gives much more credibility to my interpretation than the evaluations of my two beloved engines.

I'm wondering what Rybka, arguably currently the best engine in the world, would make of the position. Would it recognise White's troubles, or would it simply evaluate it as roughly equal for both sides?

The position is the following:

rnbqkb1r/3n1ppp/4p3/p2pP3/Pp1P4/1Pp5/B1P1NPPP/R1BQK1NR w KQkq - 0 1

If someone could input that position, let it think for a while, and tell me if it sees anything at all, it would be great. My thoughts as of right now is that my engines can't either see that it's playing down a piece, or that it can't reach a move far enough down the road where it becomes relevant (like in the endgame, say).

Thanks in advance!

Why not try Rybka yourself. An older version of it is available for free.

I just gave it to Rybka 2.2 and it sees the position as equal. I'll run it for longer...

Bear in mind that Rybka 3 might disagree.

I just downloaded the free version, it sees nothing (+0.00). That's what I thought... but the free version, which is just an old version of Rybka, is said to be much weaker than its commercial counterpart. That's why I'm seeking the real Rybka's advice :-P

(Oh, maybe Fritz would see it... do you have Fritz? ;-) )

I was updating my post above while you were busy typing >:-(

Don't have Fritz [s]but it would be fairly easy to steal.[/s]

Note: You'll have to imagine the line going through that last bit :-P

Ok, I'm not typing now so off you go...

Note that although the bishop is trapped at the moment, it is not neccessarily lost nor useless.
Not that I'd like to try whites position, but the following plans could be looked at in terms of practical chances:
1) Trade the trapped bishop for two pawns e.g. sac the d7 knight for blacks c & b pawn and then make sure to seal the holes (i.e. play c3 to keep b4 clear
2) Play on the side with the space advantage (i.e. play for a kingside attack. Whites QR is not trapped, and the 'trapped' bishop can be left to hold up the queenside. White needs to be critically aware of black sacs on h4/g2/f2 mobilising the pawns if following this plan.

Fritz11 (I don't use it much so maybe I'm using it wrong) gives +0.10 at depth 19 +0.20 at depth 20 when I got bored
