After he was mated, of course; he had a full-board mate problem. :-(O)
But the point is that in other variations involving Re1 and g3, Rxe2 is a forced mate because of the bishop cutting through the h1 diagonal.
Its all very basic but kind of exciting when you realize this while calculating and it adds a little more "dimension" to an otherwise simple position.
