Yes the Petroff is an excellent opening. Some might find humor in how I took it up: I run a scholastic chess program. A few years ago, I had a student working with me as his "senior project." He was trying to teach the Spanish opening to a group of elementary students. While examining black's second move, he told the students that 2...Nf6 was a weak move. I did not argue with him in front of his pupils, but took him aside and showed him my database that revealed reasonable results for black. I started playing the Petroff that day, and I've scored many fine victories, and draws against much higher rated players with it since.
