I'm sure that being professional players, they are perhaps a bit more critical than I would be, however it certainly sounds like the usual standard they were expecting was not met which makes their complaint seem valid to me.

When Short and Kasparov played their unsanctioned match we all accepted that the winner would be would champion. If FIDE does not treat these women properly they will form their own world championship and not play in the fide world championship.

I'm not sure they will. Kasparov was able to break away because everybody knew that the world champion is the person who beats Kasparov. The women's world champion doesn't have that cachet and nor, for that matter, do the more recent men's champions. If you go up to people in the street and ask them who is Garry Kasparov, even to this day, you will get one of two answers: 'I don't know' and 'He's the world chess champion.'
