My motto has been to play the fewest possible openings and play them very well. I chose the Kings Indian as the focus of my openings. Now I am trying to play lines that give me the best chance of winning. I still play 1.nf3 2.g6 3.Bg2 4.0-0 But were I put my c,d,and e pawns and my other N is derermined by statistics of the top 20 players by rating that have played that line.

Throughout my playing years I have experimented with several openings like most of us have... but now I am also trying to play the fewest possible openings.

Against e4 I play either the Sicilian but not one of the main lines or the French which I am finding less likeable...
Against d4 I play the Dutch. I am also going to start playing the Modern Stonewall Dutch variation...??? Any thoughts on this defense will be helpful.

I always play e4 when I am white if they respond with e5 I play the easy simple Bishop opening. I normally like the look of the board going into the middle game when I play the Bishop Opening...however I do notice against top ranked players the board does not look as good.

If they play the Sicilian against my e4. I again go off the main lines of the Sicilian and play like qe2 (also playing the qe2 against the Fench defense most of the time changes game into more of a Sicilian) or the keres variation Ne2...

I try hard not to get into any closed variation games.

Please correct me if I am wrong in any of my thoughts... I play on QA to improve my game win loss or draw...

Tell me what you think of the Dutch, French, off main line Sicilian like the Okelly or my favorite the Bishop Opening.

I play 1.d4 as white, as I'm happy against all the common replies; as black, I usually play the Caro-Kann or the Queen's Indian or QGD (by transposition from 1... Nf6 2... e6 3... d5) depending on my mood. These all lead to broadly similar structures.

I think the last remark that I've quoted in isolation refers specifically to the Sicilian but I find it a bit strange. First, I don't see how you can avoid a closed-type position if White decides to go down that route. Second, if you don't like closed positions, why do you play the French and why are you considering the Stonewall Dutch, which is about the closed-est opening there is!

The Kings Indian (1.nf3 2.g6 3.Bg2 4.0-0), but of late have been playing with other Indian's such as Nimzo-Indian and Bogo-Indian. I think that I need these later lines against better players as I have been running into trouble with just the Kings Indian. If white opens with e4 I play the Caro-Kann.

The reason I play these are many I suspect. First, WhyBish here on line got me interested into being a more positional player. I think these lines help me with that, as I am a raving maniac when I play chess. Attack Attack Attack. As we all know--not a good idea, as there is such a thing as prophylactics. Second, I am influenced by Aron Nimzowitsch. I live and die by ideas expressed in his book, "My System". I think these lines of play, fall in line with his physiology. Third, richeby, here on line played me a game with comment. He helped to reinforce some ideas I was working on. Such as positional play, and over protection, expressed by Nimzowitsch.
Not that I am trying to steal this thread, but If you disagree with these comments I would love to hear your thoughts. Keep playing our favorite openings and good luck. JungJoe

If I wsa ever really seriously needing to do well As white I'd play 1d4 to play to my relative strengths, but I just play for fun so b3/b4/f4/f3?? I will play for entertainment value. I play e4 when I'm in the mood to try and improve my tactics.
I'm happier as black and have a smaller set of things I'll play, never e4e5 (usually accelerated dragon which isn't great for me but at least I am in fimiliar territory (I won't even claim to 'understand' it)), but Ill play almost anything against d4 (slav/orthodox semi-slav/dutch/nimzo/benoni/benko)
