The tie break systemm is flawed.

I want to maximize my chances of winning a tournament. That means I want the optimal result from preliminary rounds. The optimal result is to advance with the smallest possible score. And it is better to tie for first in round 1 than to win win out right.

Lets look at the results of Round 1 of Auto-Master 1562
retket advanced with a perfect score of 12. If you sum his opponents scores you get 12. I advanced with a score of 10. If you sum my opponents scores you get 14. Does this mean I faced stronger competition? No, I realized that I would have more tie break poiints if I split my match against Antak. Retkat had clinched a spot in the finals if when he scored his 10th point. If he had resigned his last game, even if he had a winning position, his opponents would have 14 points. My advantage over retket is due to a careful reading of the tie break rules. Either retkat is not aware of this trick or maximizing his tie break standing is not important to him. Given his rating he can expect to go undefeated in the finals as well.

The fourth guy in the finals is bruno borges. I have an advantage over him also. I can hope that Antak scores atleast 1 point in the finals. That will add to my opponents point total. If roound 2 ends in a tie I win. Say retkat and I each get 10 points. The sum of brunos score and Antak's score will be 4. It seems unlikely that I will sweep my games against bruno and Antak. However if my rating was 2350 that would be expected. Not only do I have a tie break advantage but I know it. That increases my advantage becuase I can use that knowledge in accepting and offering draws. If I could play supersharp openings. I would play them against retkat becuase a 1 win and 1 loss result is more common then 2 draws if I play solid opening's. Suppose retkat used my trick and caused his section to end in a tie. Then there would be 5 players in the finals. That would mean another round. If a tie with one player in round 1 is good a tie with 2 players is better. It seems almost impossible that 9 players would advance from round 1 unless that is everyone's goal. That would mean 3 groups of 3 in round 2. 3 groups of 3 could yield 6 players in round 3. I shudder to think of the possibilities in an open tournament?

It is a little perverse when the rules indicate that it is better to lose one game than go undefeated. It also slow things down when players are rewarded for splitting their match.

The tie breaks should be as follows
1. The sum of 2xpints in round 2 plus points in round 1. (useful in open events with 3 rounds.
2. Total points scored in all rounds.
3. Total points scored deleting games with less than 3 moves by white counting points in round 2 double.
4.Total points scored deleting games with less than 3 moves by white.
Repeat steps 1 through 3 but a draw scores .8 and a win score 2.
5. Repeat steps 1-3 but a win with black counts 2.2 a win with white 2.0

Tie-Breaks

When two or more players obtain the same score in the final round of a tournament, the following tie-break methods will be applied in order:

Averaged opponent score: This value is computed by adding the scores obtained by all the opponents in all rounds (ignoring the games played against the player) and dividing the total by the number of games played. The player with the highest value will be the winner, presuming that he/she had a tougher competition.

No one pointed out my error. Games against the tied competitor are ignored. This is important. For example I have already scored 10 points in one tournament. My opponnent has less than 8 points. There is no advantage to losing my game with him.

There is still a flaw. It seems better to tie for first in the preliminary rounds than to win outright. Instead of eliminating everyone in your section you want one or 2 to continue winning games in future rounds. This is especially true if they are no threat to eliminate you later on.

What tie break system, physie? I don't believe there is one here. If you tie with someone for the top score in your group in the first round then you both go to the second round. So what's the problem?

If you tie in the last round the winner is determined by tie breaks. what appears after tie breaks was copied from about this site.

The old method was rating. The higher rated player won the turnament. I complained that this is a huge advantage for the higher rated player when there are only 2 in the finals. I am a USCF local TD. Rating is not considered in over the board play.

Miguel read my complaint and modified the tie break system. I wrote to him about the flaw in the new method and also mentioned in my fist post in on this topic. I either missed the part that is in bold or he added it between the time that I sent him a message about this flaw and when I started this topic. By the time I wrote this topic the phrase starting with ignoring was present becuase I cut and paste when I started this topic on June 9th.

I think there is still a flaw. Suppose nobody in round 1 plays at or near my level. It is better for me to tie for first in hopes that the guy I tie with will earn points in the semifinals.

It is not that I advise players to use this strategy. If there is a flaw it should be corrected.

Do you know the tie break methods used by USCF? is there an international correspondance chess federation? how do they break ties?
