ItsYourTurn.com is nice but it has more limitations for non-subscribers than redhotpawn.com. I've played there before I found QueenAlice.
You should also try SchemingMind.com. It's free, just like QueenAlice.com and it also has chess variants.

"slow-chess" or "net-chess" as it used to be called is another site to consider with many good people and tough opponents...and like queen alice it's free. My handle there is geebs.
