Yes, He was a GM from Azerbaijan for which he played the Olymiads in 2002,2004,2006 and 2008 and won the individual silver medal in 2008. (The Chess Olympiad of 2010 he missed due to a conflict with the national chess federation.)
With the Azerbaijan team (with Mamedyarov, Radjebov, Mammadov & Guseinov) he won the gold medal of the European Team Chess Championship in 2009 and the bronze medal in 2007.
He was specially known as an extremely good blitz player.
He played his last tournament in the Netherlands in 2012 (Tata Steel Trm.)
Already early 2000, after a collaps, doctors diagnosed epilepsy and a brain tumor. Despite of that he managed to create a brilliant chess career. While receiving treatment for the brain tumor in a hospital in Heidelberg, Germany , Gashimov died on the 11th. of january.
