You should check for unwinnable positions too - otherwise someone could start a game with just two kings! |
I do check that both sides have only one king actually.
Wouldn't it be easier to have a library of 'approved' FEN positions and let people choose from them? |
I imagine you may want to play from any valid position at times. Imagine the case where you lost a game and then would like to 'try again' from the point where you blundered. That would be an interesting thing to do if both players agree to the idea.
I guess I'll have to watch how the feature is used (or misused) and make adjustments if needed.

Sorry, I probably didn't make that very clear - of course you check for legal and possible positions. By unwinnable, I meant that someone could start a game where there is only a black and a white king on the board.

Oh! I get it now!
Yes, this is one more reason to keep these games outside of the rating system.

Why not have tournaments where a particular opening or opening variation is specified, eg the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit or the Grob. It could be interesting to have a tournament where the opening is the one played by "Fischer" recently on the internet - 1.f3 2.Kf2 etc. Or you could have tournaments starting with an endgame position to be played out.

Endgame tournaments that's silly chessmate.
