Just a little bit more... and... :-)

Há! Here it is! :-D

Start position:

Flip

1. Kg7 h4 2. Kf6

Position after 2. Kf6:

Flip

The two moves with the white king are ambiguous, and threat both: capture black pawn or defend the white pawn.

It is black who should choose the way the draw will happen.

If black thing he can win promoting the pawn first, here what happens:

2... h3 3. Ke6 h2 4. c7

Position after 4. c7:

Flip

Ops! Black just saw that both will promote at same time, so he tried to take the white pawn anyway:

4... Kb7 5. Kd7 h1=Q 6. c8=Q+

Position after 6. c8=Q+:

Flip

So... There is no time to take the pawn. It is a draw. But, what happened if black had saw this draw and decide to take the white pawn early?

Lets see:

2... Kb6 3. Ke5

Position after 3. Ke5:

Flip

So what to do now? Take the white pawn!

3... Kxc6 4. Kf4

Position after 4. Kf4:

Flip

Run, baby, run!
4... h3 5. Kg3 h2

Position after 5... h2:

Flip

And then one day you find, ten years have gone behind you, No one told you when
to run, You missed the starting gun...

6. Kxh2

All right, and if black just pretend to take the white pawn, but it really want to promote his own pawn? Lets try:

Position after 1. Kg7 h4 2. Kf6 Kb6 3. Ke5 h3

Flip

4. Kd6 h2 5. c7

Position after 5. c7:

Flip

Holly smoke! Is that possible?
Let us try to stop a little bit more the white pawn:

5... Kb7 6. Kd7

Position after 6. Kd7:

Flip

6... h1=Q 7. c8=Q+

And it is a draw again! No way...

Ok, I let you to understand by yourself what happens if black try to take the white pawn very early with:

1. Kg7 Kb6 2. Kf6 h4 3. Ke5

And the options are:

3... h3

Position after 3... h3:

Flip

or:

3... Kxc6

Position after 3... Kxc6:

Flip

I hope you liked this momentary lapse of reason!

alib2004Philippines flag
wow... that was amazing. i never thought of the white's pawn threat. but what happens if king's response was 1.Kg7 Ka7?

nothing, it's even became more easy.
1.Kg7 Ka7 2.Kf6 and you reach a same type of 'position 2' with more a tempo.
