when i was a teenager decades ago, i used to play the sicilian defense at all costs and without reservation, no ifs, no buts.
later at my mid twenties, to avoid any untoward opening surprises prepared by contemporaries, i shifted to 1.--- e5 defense.
now at my present age, where opening theories are increasingly changeable, where i cannot cope up with, i fell in love with the french defense. even without reading any opening manuals, i could play this solid opening intuitively.
to summarize... i play the french automatically against all opponents with high ratings...i play the sicilian where the opponents are not too strong...and i play 1--- e5 where the opponents usually play the ruy lopez (and not the wild king's gambit!)
occasionally, i play the nimzovich defense (1--- Nc6) and the philidor's defense only in rapid or blitz games.

Thanks, Chesser. So I assume you think that the Nimzovich Def is better then its reputation. How have you done with it?

Hi Green Bishop.
"So I assume you think that the Nimzovich Def is better then its reputation. How have you done with it?"
Yes I do think the Nimzovich Def is better than its reputation. Perhaps that is because the books I have read are biased in its favour. Anyway as you can see from the stats below it is certainly worth a try.
My most recent games using the NOD shows me scoring as follows…
Played 22 games AS BLACK
W 12 D1 L 9 =57% Opponents average rating 1782 (My rating over same period 1755)
Scoring 57% indicates an Elo rating performance of 50 points above my opponent average.
Since I was Black in all these games I estimate that the NOD’s performance was better still, say worth another 50 Elo points.
Conclusion: My performance with the “Nimzovich opening has been roughly 100 Elo points better than my average opening.
Have fun!

Thanks, Chesser_Cat. Congratulations on your success with the Nimzowitsch. What do your opponents usually play against it?
