how were the first round pairings done? i'm just curious because i was paired with someone who is within about 70 points of me and i would have assumed it to be a bigger gap with the number of players here.

Pairings for Swiss tournaments are random at this time. When the site is on a faster server I may start doing more intelligent pairings, right now even the random pairings take a long time to be computed.
