As a relatively new player to correspondence chess, I'm wondering how many games you can play simultaneously before your play suffers?

Most of my games are on a weekly move basis, and including all the sites I play at I'm finding that more than 20 or so and my play degrades a bit. At about 30 games my ability to play drops off heavily.
Anyone have any thoughts?

You can handle more games than i can. My limit is about 12 at a time despite having done this for many years. I depend on being able to see all the moves in each game in my head so i can study them while at work, driving, watching TV etc...

I don't think I could do that with even one game at this point, I find it difficult to remember positions. How long did you play postal? Do you think that playing CC brought about this ability or have you always been good at remembering your positions?

Personally, I'd say about 10 or so. And even then some of them better be in a stage where heavy thinking is not necessary (book theory, technical endgame). I find that having more than a handful of games that require really heavy-duty analyzing for each move is very mentally exhausting.

I have played cc off and on since 1992, and it is something that took a lot of effort to develop.
When I consider my next move, I set up the board and play through ALL THE MOVES over and over and over and over until I see a "candidate" move which I then examine for suitability, which means I check my books and databases to insure I'm not about to commit a blunder.
I almost never set up the current position and analyze from there. I have to see the flow of the game. After doing this several thousand times I can now see the moves of a game in my head. At least in a limited number of them.

would you all believe, that at this very moment, i'm playing more than 400 correspondence games simultaneously?

well, that's true. ?:-( i just treat every game as if i'm playing ACTIVE or BLITZ chess. i don't punish myself pouring deep analysis by setting up positions over a chessboard. i merely analyze positions as they appear on the site. normally, i don't refer on theoretical books UNLESS i sense that my opponent is trying to outwit me with latest opening tossles. it is only when the game has ended that i consult with books to ascertain whether my opening treatment is correct.

of course, i can't recommend that my method is far better. on the other hand, it could be fatally suicidal. you may ask, what's the point of playing hundreds of CC games at one time? :-O well, i'm just testing my INTUITION. it may prove useful in OTB games now that time controls in tournaments are lowered down. :-)
