Mandaragit, 400?? The most I had seen someone playing before hearing that was 276, I thought that guy must be nuts!

Ridge, do you set up on a real board or a computer board?

Having learned to play serious chess at the pace of 3 days per move, I cannot play blitz.
I have tried for years to play faster and my limit is game/30. (30 minutes per player per game)
One thing about cc that really benefits otb play: I can recognize almost any opening in a very few moves and begin to formulate an effective plan. Also, my otb range of openings with either colour seems to be broader than most players.

I too rely heavily on intuition. The majority of my library is "general" works with few books on specific openings.

SethK,
For many years I used two or three full sized boards all at once, now I use the board in SCID (shanes chess information database) where I store my games.
Often, I use a small travel chess set to quickly check out sidelines and tactics. It stays with me wherever I go.

SethK, I think the time proposed by RidgeRunner is a good time (Can change depending on the complexity of the position or your (or your opponnent ;-) )level.
If you can devote, say about 1 hour a day, then you can play 2 games daily, or 14 games weekly.
Personally I think about 15-20 minutes per game trying to answer them the same day I receive the move, but sometimes I need to think a lot more just to figure out what to do. I only can play CC about 1 hour a day, so when I played more than 6 games per day my playing strengh went right to the ground :^-( .
Scid is a great database to keep track of all your games.
For other places where you can not see the board on a web site (as we can in QueenAlice) I am starting to work with chessgate, which can import directly for the email the moves list (i use it for my games at the IECC, where all the interaction between players is through the email).

Speaking of time this is one lousy trick I employed in another website where the time control was 30d + 12h/move / Game...

I essentially made the first ten moves at a normal pace. Once I saw that the guy was responding immediately I stopped moving until I only had 1 day to complete my moves and he had about 40 days (because of the increment) :-D

He continued moving fast after I resumed and by moving quickly I restored my clock to ten days to complete my moves while he ended up down a whole piece :-(O)

Needless to say I won the game and my opponent congratulated me for being such a hard cookie to bite. :-D
