how many games do people have going on at one time. myself, i find that 2- 4 at any one time is about all i can handle comfortably. i could probably play more, but then im kind of defeating the purpose of playing CC as i find myself spending all my time online thinking out my moves for each game. i also find i tend to make more mistakes the more games im involved in.

I think that will change for each player... Since our "free" time is not the same.
I could play 10~15 games... But I think that about 8 would be better...

There are some people that plays on the "free time" at work; There are people that only have free time at night (at home). Some will play at night and eventually at work...
There are the people that would only play on weekends and holydays... etc...
(And there are the "crazy" ones :-D with 100+ games...)

It´s hard to achieve a "medium number" of games for all players...

Just be careful not to enter the first round of too many events...lots of players forget that they will (may!) continue on to the second or third round months later when they are no longer so interested in chess or no longer have so much free time available! :-O

I've had more than 80 (on multiple sites), but find that 15-30 keeps my blitz addiction in check without hampering the quality of my play too much. Against some opponents, though, more than five games are too many.

If I were serious enough about improvement, I would dramatically reduce my game load.

I reduced my game to about 15 before, but found out that I tend to be fidgety when my opponents aren't making any moves for days at a time. Right now I am about at 35-40 games. What I did to manage the "fidget" is to use one site for blitz (meaning, I don't do very deep analysis and I tend to move in a considerable number of games at a sitting of several minutes), and then to use another site for slower more cc type of play. sort of using one to analyze and using the other to practice and apply. the "faster" site mimics OTB more, while slower play in another site is for analysis improvement, something like that.
