Has anyone looked at:

http://queenalice.com/game.php?id=2267

Very pretty combination starting at move 23 where dnptrs wins a pawn by ignoring the threatened fxe5. Back at move 19 dnptrs takes a risk for a central pawn majority by offering a queen exchange on f3 and then taking back with his g pawn and opening his castled position!

He maintains his strong e5 knight, which merlos immediately trades off for his locked up bishop and the opportunity to activate his remaining knight.

But dnptrs sets his sights back on the weak c6 pawn, and after this you can see that all of his play is based around using this imbalance to obtain a winning endgame focused on his central pawn majority.

Can't help it now... :-D

Maybe I am just nitpicking but, wasn't 7...c5 instead of castling more to the point?

I also have a problem with 9...b5 as it weakens the c6 point. How about 9...Nbd7 with the idea of Nb6-d5?

From the White side I found 14.Bxf5! very pertinent... I tried the dentist aproach with 14.Qc2 until I saw 14...Ne4

On 22 why not 22...Nb6 with the idea of Nc4?

From move 28 and on it was one-sided

Yes, in terms of the ninth move that was the pivotal positional mistake, I guess I should have mentioned this as it was the point of my discussion of attacking the weak c6, sorry for the oversight. Nbd7 was the move I also thought was better.

As to 7...c5, 8.Qb3 looks a good response to me at first glance since after 8...b6 or using the queen to protect the b pawn, white can push the d pawn. I'd have to spend more time on it to fully grasp the significance and it may well be that your 7...c5 would work but I have a hard time faulting merlos for castling and thinking about king safety.

22...Nb6 looks a lot better than the played move, but I think it would result in an open, occupied a file and a centralised bishop for white.

All good points though, an interesting discussion.

My idea with 7...c5 was to prevent the minority attack that happened in the game and keep the pawn structure symmetrical. Although, I posted the question carelessly without considering the remifications so let me see.

7...c5 8.Qb3 (your move)8...Qb6 :-O Yes... I don't mind having the double pawns on the b-file so long as I have some chances...

However, if something more placid is desired:

8...Qd7 9.Bb5 Nc6 etc. Maybe I am making mistakes as I toss ideas but Black does have choices to keep the pawn structure intact, prevent the minority attack, or unbalance the pawn structure not minding double pawns at the b-file...

But I am wrong as 7...c5 seems to fail when White plays 8.d5 so things are not as easy as we thought...

I honestly didn't see the urgency of castling 7...0-0 but who am I to attach question marks? but sensed that White was going to play b4 and cripple the queenside. That's why I considered 7...c5 more pertinent. However, now that I look at this I am more confused than before :-(

I, as a player looking to improve positionally, just really liked the way c6 was exploited. My thought was less that this was a perfect game and more that it was a very nice example of using a small imbalance (the weak c6) to force the issue.

BTW, I'm still looking forward to your annotations once the first Queen Alice tournament ends. Good luck to both you and Pannonius!

Yes, the exploitation of the weakness at c6 was like taken from a textbook. I liked the game a lot as well :-) I am also trying to improve my game and over here I have found people that are way better than me. See for example the game that Brandt won against me :-( I have never felt so outplayed before in my life :-(

I try to keep notes of my games and discuss them with my opponent. For instance, in one of my thematic games against Ruben as Black, I was on the verge of being massaged positionally and when I showed him the idea we couldn't find a way to strengthen the variation... The ugly thing is that Ruben found an original way of treating the opening that has not been seen before to the best of my knowledge [ At least not in the books/databases that I have... ]
