I have been trying to increase my over the board rating but haven't been able to root out some of my most pronounced weaknesses. Specifically speaking:
1. Poor endgame technique 2. Very poor calculation 3. Bad attitude over the board
For that reason I have decided to put together a plan of improvement. In this plan I intend to educate myself in the endgame. I have chosen some books (Muller's Fundamental Chess Endgames is just superb) and the appropriate software to work with. I intend to play the endgames against a powerfull engine and criticize myself until I get it right... I have gathered all the material and it is up to me to start working. By the end of this adventure I will have a complete "ENDGAME TRAINING" pgn file... Thought?
Somebody say something please!

Would be good to share that, maybe some of us can comment some of your moves or suggest some ideas. Good luck!

I am in the very, very start of the process. Though, I studied the endgame all year long I didn't systematize it properly. I will put everything together and show you what's up.

Using engines to study endgames can be deceiving though since they have no concept of a plan and can sometimes go into complicated series of moves when a simpler strategy based on an idea immediately recognizable by a human would suffice to win/draw.

I have heard that too. That's the reason because chess engines use tablebases. I have read somewhere that sometimes the engines do many "stupid" moves just to get to some position they know to finish.

Well... As you say, the tablebases and the engines together are decent. The engine that I have seen to be most proficient is Ruffian. So proficient is it that the only things that it miss from a human are the capacity to spit over the board, curse, and misbehave... Though, its moves really hurt and I have seen it play almost flawlessly typical endgames. In any case I need a calculator that I can use in the privacy of my place at odd times and since many free engines have ratings that range from 1800 to 2600 I think that the exercise will still be of benefit
