I just uploaded the Opening Browser that I've been working on for a while. You can access it directly from the menu, under the new Database section.
Now what is the Opening Browser? Put it simply, it will allow you to navigate the opening database that the site uses to categorize games. When you first enter it you will see a board with the initial position and on the right a list of possible opening moves (the 20 of them, actually). For each move you will see the ECO code and variant name (if available) and if that move appears in several variants you will also see the number of them.
There are a couple of shortcuts into the Opening Browser from the game page so that you don't always have to start from the beginning:
- For a game that has been categorized, you can now click the opening name below the game title to go directly to that opening in the browser.
- If the current position on a game is found in the opening database, then you will see a "Find in Opening Browser" link right below the FEN for the position. You can use this to research possible response moves.
As always, please call my attention if you find any mistakes or if you have ideas to improve this feature.
Enjoy!
