Because I used to play at a fairly high level (in modern terms on the expert/master boundary) I find it difficult not to be competitive, although I stopped playing for 18 years and only returned in the last few months. I want my games to be fun (hence the unorthodox openings) but I'm afraid the old red mist tends to descend. The game is very addictive!

Which in turn explains my admiration for people like Alexandra Kosteniuk, who can play the game to a high standard, and still have a 'cool life' as well.
