I want to start a game with a friend from a particular position. Do I start from row 1 or row 8 and what character do I use to divide the rows?

Obvious error! Do White or Black pieces go in lower case?

Download software "Winboard" here: http://tim-mann.org/xboard.html
Then set up the position you want. After that, chose menu "edit/copy position to clipboard", and then paste it to Queen Alice.

White pieces in upper case; start with row 8 (the top of a diagram printed in the conventiona orientation with White at the bottom). Rows are separated by slashes. Full details at http://www.very-best.de/pgn-spec.htm#16. (The full stop is part of the URL!)
