The thread "Women in chess" in the off-topic forum is currently marked as having eight replies to the original post but only four are displayed.

I think it's some people who do write a reply and erase it afterward. Maybe the coding of these forums don't allow the number to decrease as well, or it's here on purpose to compare the number of messages written and those deleted

I think the number should just be the number of replies currently in the thread. As a reader, I don't care if a reply has been posted and then deleted since I last read the thread: it makes no difference to anything.
