Read the section on ratings.

Some doubt exists as to whether the correct calculations are currently being implemented, though this concerns initial games.

During the first 25 games played by a player, we are trying to determine the relative playing strength. It is important to note that provisional ratings usually fluctuate greatly

More to the point:

The rating for a provisional player is calculated as the average of the provisional ratings obtained on each of the individual games.

Whenever I play blitz over the internet, I spend a lot of effort trying not to look at the rating of my opponent, it affects my game a lot when I know the rating.
