Topic: Rating updates: based on current or before-match standings?

Hey guys,
Short question: Is the calculation of a new rating based on the players' ratings before the beginning of the game or at the end of it?
I assume it might be the latter, because it gives you a more accurate rating of your actual strength in comparison to the opponent, yet the first option would be more accurate when it comes to evaluating possible opponents before accepting a challenge.
sorry if it's a dumb question, but I couldn't find an answer neither in the "About"-section, nor on the first 10 pages of the forum discussions.
