I know that these are prohibited in the forums because they cause Miguel's server undue stress ...  ... but are they prohibited in private messages too?

You are only not allowed to post links with the purpose of driving traffic to other websites. Advertisements in other words.

So if we are discussing chess and I know a great site that have something to add to the discusion can I post the link ?
For example: We are discussing a particualr oppening, and Wikipedia have a full detail page about it. Are we allowed to put the link in the forum ?
