One of my opponent's time is going to elapse in one of our games in a matter of hours. I've never claimed a game on time before, I do see though that there apparently will be an clock icon that I can click to claim a game.

My question is this. If I don't claim immediately, and my opponent moves after his time has elapsed, can I still claim the game?

The clock symbol disappears but you have the possibility of cancelling the game, which is equivalent to "aborting" the game.

What does "aborting" the game mean? I have no intention of forfeiting. Do I still win the game in this case? This is a tournament game by the way. Also I have another game against him but he would still have over a day to respond, but I'd rather just claim both games at once, if he goes on to forfeit the second as well. By the way, he has already over-stepped the limit in about a dozen of his games.

Long story short, I just would like to know, yes or no, if I can still claim a game on time if my opponent makes a move subsequent to having over stepped the time limit (as long as I in turn don't overstep my own time limit before claiming on time)

If you don't claim the game on time, and then your opponent moves, the clock starts over again, just as though he or she had made the move on time. I think that's what you were asking.

tewald is right, and you couldn't abort the game if it was in a tournament. This means that for all practical purposes it would be as if your opponent never stepped over his or her clock.

What I meant by "aborting" a game is, well, cancelling it :-) It just means that everything will be as though it never existed. It doesn't mean you lose... but you don't win or draw either. ;-)

To make matters worse, sometimes screwy things happen to the time left to move, especially if the game features a three- or seven-day 'bank'.

Some players, e.g. phystutordotcom, mention specifically (in their personal info) that they will claim any game gone overtime at once. Me, I tend to wait for the third or fourth overtime. I even felt a bit guilty claiming on a Filipino opponent, who might have needed to depend on his visits to the local cybercafe. But it helps to be clear on the matter beforehand. In a tournament, you only stand to gain from the occasional claimed game. So give 'em fair warning, and you can sleep easy!
