How do I turn on the algebraic notation on the displayed game board? It's now blank...

Preferences --> Board Style (click on + if you don't see this option) and Choose "Show algebraic notation headers" , down of the page.

I don't see any link for board style under preferences

Look at what Pepato said within the parentheses; click on the plus sign to expand your options.
