Any chance this will be done by next Friday?
(Incidentally -- I don't follow those things, what's the most men tablebases actually have?).

It might happen on a Friday. But it won't be a Friday that I, you, your children or your great ... great grandchildren will ever hope to see
There are currently up to 6-man tablebases, around a terabyte in size. I don't think they're technically complete but there are trivial positions which aren't worked on and this will probably be true for future collections.
I read that 7-man tablebases will be essentially complete by the end of 2015. I estimate these may run up to around 100 terabytes or so.
8-man tablebases may get to 7 or 8 petabytes. Players are going to need bigger drives

Man...
I wonder if they're going to fit on USB keys someday.
Thanks for the info!

5 and 6-man "Bitbases" will. Just.
Aren't we in danger of drifting off topic? Oh, who cares. It's only your thread

Yeah, it was my thought exactly. At first I was thinking that it might not be à propos and that I should therefore refrain from asking, but then I realised nobody would really care but me, and I don't.
Anyway, worst comes to worst, I don't learn openings but feel confident that someday people won't have to.
