It probably has been asked before, but I'll ask again. What happens if a player loses his provisional rating during a game? If I play an opponent with 24 games and a provisional rating, do I still have the benefit of not losing rating points if I lose the game after he passes 25 games?

Probably not, no.

Questions about the rating system (or indeed the hating system) are always the most tricky. The system often appears to defy logic. It has caused many a sleepless night and driven A-Level maths students to the brink of insanity. Not to mention resulting in numerous forum quarrels and name calling among the most reserved members.
So be careful. And for peace of mind do not attempt to use a calculator.

technicaldraw, your opponent's affect on your rating depends on his/her status at the time your game ends. If you have a lost game and see your opponent has 24 games, quit immediately. That will be your opponent's 25th game, and you're still safe. You would lose points on your opponent's 26th game.
