During my commute recently I listened to a recording of "How Life Imitates Chess: Making the Right Moves, from the Board to the Boardroom" by Garry Kasparov. The life advice is generally pretty forgettable, but the accounts of his big matches are pretty interesting. So anyway, in the end he retires from chess and enters the political arena. He describes himself as a member of the opposition. I would be curious to hear from anyone who lives in that part of the world. How is he perceived? Is he at all important as a political figure?

If I remember correctly he's in a marginal party that receives little support from the population in general.

You may want to check this out from CBS News.

The CBS link depicts him as a fringe figure. It's a couple of years old, so maybe one of our Russian pals can update us.

BTW, here is a snippet showing chess through the eyes of the journalist:
"Throughout his career, Kasparov intimidated opponents with his intensity, creativity, and daring. He could look at a chessboard and see 15 moves ahead. At a Toronto exhibition in June, he took on 20 opponents and beat all of them in an hour-and-a-half." In the book Kasparov expressed bemusement with the recurring question of how many moves does he think ahead.

People like to think that the best chess players think 100 moves ahead on a normal, casual nothing-special-there basis. I always think of it as ridiculous.

If I'm not mistaken this book is actually a joint work with another writer and Kasparov has admitted that the other guy did most of the work. But I am saying this from memory without checking, so I could be wrong! ;-)
