Odie ... If you look at MB5's games, I'm sure he has done both. I suspect that at one stage he got caught up in the 'who is number one?' furore, albeit in his own quiet way, and he played all comers, but most of his games were wins against highly-rated players using theoretical openings.
Having said that, I don't think he was trying to find theoretical novelties, but just to get 'the feel' of certain positions. And in certain kinds of position (especially those with unbalanced material) a strong human player is still a better test than a computer.

Here is my theory. If you look at at least his recent games, all his opponents have a rating below approximately 2300: all players against whom he can expect to win. If he gets into a situation where all is not going well, he offers a draw. By playing a large number of these sorts of games, his rating keepings creeping upwards and will continue to do so.

Well if he's playing somebody that is rated 2200 and above (or even 2100 or 2000) they will certainly know better than to just accept a draw when they get get whey more rating points with the win. :)
