I'm currently working on a chess computer and was hoping to test it out in some correspondence play.

I'm aware computer-aided analysis for your own games is frowned upon. However, assuming this was clearly stated in the user's bio, would it be appropriate to create a new user which is basically just the computer? Ie, its moves are solely determined by the output of the program.

I couldn't find a clarification of this in the site rules, hope to get an idea of public opinion on this.

I don't think there would be anything wrong with that as long as the other player is fully aware of the situation. It does depend on how high the strength is already as most players would not want to play a 2500+ computer online.

Also, I think you should not enter any tournaments. You could choose from the Open Games list but then you'd have to explain the details each time and get lots of cancellations.

The ideal situation for you is to create games yourself and change the game name to something like "Play my computer program 0001" and then also add a default introductory message. That along with appropriate explanations (including perhaps an estimated strength) on your stats page should be more than enough.

I thought Miguel did not want this... can't remember where I saw it...

That may be and it would be interesting to get his opinion. Keep in mind that Dusk could have told no one and played any games he wanted including tournament games. /:-(

Much better for him to be up front about it.

It is expressly forbidden by the site rules.

You cannot use a computer or computer program to evaluate or analyze a game.

You can always ask Miguel to make an exception. However, I think it would be a bad idea to have just one computer player on the site. As I see it, the only acceptable way to use a computer on the site would be to have it play only unrated, non-tournament games that are clearly marked as being computer games. By 'clearly marked', I mean that every challenge or open game must be labeled 'Play my computer' or something similar. It's not enough to just mention it on the account profile because people will not necessarily read the profile before starting the game.

However, even if you do this, others may see your computer and decide that they can host their program here — most likely, just a commercial program they bought, rather than something they developed themselves. These other people might not see the need to restrict the sorts of games their computer plays or to clearly advertise what they are doing. I realise that there are almost certainly people who are already using computers for their moves. There will always be people who maliciously break the rules and there's almost nothing that can be done about that; however, I think that legitimizing computer players increases the chances of people naively breaking the rules, too.

There is also the aspect that making an exception to the site rules for one player encourages people to believe that the site's rules are flexible and this leads to anarchy.

As such, I think it would be a bad thing to encourage the belief that it's OK to play computers on Queen Alice.

I don't know if there are any correspondence sites that accept computer players. Real-time sites like FICS (http://www.freechess.org/) are usually happy to accept clearly-marked computer players, especially when it's a completely new program and not a bought commercial system.

Dave.

Is that the reference you meant, whyBish. If so, it does not prohibit a computer player. Of course it may be my interpretation but to me it indicates that if you are a human player, you should not use a computer to evalute or analyze your game.

If intended that way, there is no exception needed and most if not all of richerby's arguments break down.

The reality as richerby stated is that there are computer players among us. Perhaps they are even posting in the forum! It would be refreshing to have one come out of the shadows.

Anarchy is not around the corner at Queen Alice. :-(O)
