The site rules say nothing about 'if you are a human player'. They says, quite simply and explicitly, that 'using a computer or computer program to evaluate or analyze a game' is forbidden. Period. Whether you are a human, a computer or a mutant space goat. Deciding what move to make is 'evaluating or analyzing a game' and this may not be done by a computer on this site.

No that isn't the reference I meant. It was a post by Miguel. I take interest in this as I have made a number of chess programs over the years and this is the sort of thing I would also like to do. I doubt my chess programs would reach even a 1400 rating here, but I don't think Miguels argument was around engine strength either...

Hmmm... I can't find the link using google...

Thank you all for the feedback. It is much appreciated. :)
The impression I'm getting is that most people would be unwilling to play against a computer, regardless of whether it was developed within the community. So it looks like my computer will have to find somewhere else.
It is expressly forbidden by the site rules.
You cannot use a computer or computer program to evaluate or analyze a game.

If my parsing is correct this prohibition is limited to the seeking or acceptance of external advice. Essentially, any player - human or otherwise - is just running some program.
The reality as richerby stated is that there are computer players among us. |
Hmm. I had the impression this was rare and I'm hoping it will stay that way. My argument is that this is different because the thing is my student and I therefore consider its every move to be largely attributable to me.
Question: Since I know my program's algorithm, I could theoretically power down the computer, sit down with pen and paper, and follow said algorithm for a particular position. Clearly, I didn't use a computer, but had I done so the same move would have been made. What's the difference?

Well, likewise, I'd be pretty happy if mine got so much as a four-digit rating at this stage. But if there are more like us, would it be a worthy feature request that a dedicated tournament for computers (or similar) be set up?
