It is also prohibited:

1.Players dodgers using new accounts (the same person has more than one account) to manipulate tournaments and increase your Ranking.
Resign before the first move.

2.Players dodgers using some kind of machine as Fritz to help to analyse the games.

The question is how to detect them?

If my parsing is correct this prohibition is limited to the seeking or acceptance of external advice.

How on earth do you parse 'you cannot use a computer' to mean anything other than that computers are prohibited? It says nothing about 'external advice'. It says, plainly and simply, that you cannot use a computer.

I had the impression this was rare and I'm hoping it will stay that way. My argument is that this is different [...]

I assume that computer cheating is rare. Any computer cheat would surely be rated more than four hundred points higher than me because they'd beat me every time. Right now, there are only seventeen players rated 400 points above me.

And what you're proposing is certainly different, since you are being entirely honest about it.

Question: Since I know my program's algorithm, I could theoretically power down the computer, sit down with pen and paper, and follow said algorithm for a particular position. Clearly, I didn't use a computer, but had I done so the same move would have been made. What's the difference?

The difference is that, even if you could somehow avoid making huge numbers of mistakes in your attempts to follow the algorithm, you could not do in a week what your computer could do in seconds.

I'd be pretty happy if mine got so much as a four-digit rating at this stage.

I'm sure that a correct implementation of alpha-beta with an evaluation function that considered only material and checkmate would have a four-figure rating on this site, if not 1500+.

I explained this; if you try and make a move without a computer, you're still running some program or other inside your head. You don't agree?

I've done this for debugging. It takes a few minutes.

To make an assumption that players that use computer assistance, do so all the time is nonsensical. Those would be rare indeed as that is pretty much pointless. The number of people that use computers for only some games would be significantly higher than that. Those that use one to evaluate a position on the fly would be an order of magnitude higher still.

Dusk, I commend your attempt to stay on the up and up but as you can see, there will always be those that disagree. If your program is in the early stages and not that strong yet, there would be plenty of players willing to test it out ... myself included. Perhaps you shouldn't have bothered posting until your program was 2000+. Contrary to what richerby says, I think that rule was intended to discourage human players from using computer assistance to help them win games.

That was what I meant with the "external advice" interpretation I came up with and explained rather poorly. ;)

I'm glad there's willing testers, though richerby's point about setting a bad precedent (that people should start creating computer accounts) is a significant one; I'm not sure this is the right place to be testing it.

I shall ponder further. :P
