Samuel Reshevsky. Early on I took a liking to his games because for some reason they always seemed to me to be easier to understand than anybody else’s. Later I meet him several times and found him to be pleasant enough, if somewhat aloof at first. Although I’m not Jewish I admired his dedication to his religion and family and he seemed to keep things in proper perspective. Despite his demeanor away from chess, when he sat down to play he was meaner than a snake and I saw him do some rather questionable things at the board in an attempt to annoy and distract his opponents. The thrill of my chess “career” was actually playing him once and holding him to a draw in a N and P ending...no matter that he was in his late 60’s and his rating was down to under 2500!
