Here's a good game from the 5th anniversary tournament. White's move 12 is quite a "!!" in my opinion. Black resigned a few moves later. I'm at a loss to understand the situation. Can anyone shed some light?

Well, Qg4 sure looks nice.
I am not sure why black resigned after Qg3, but his position does look extremely ugly.
It might be something like this that prompted black's resignation: 15. ...gxf5 16. exf5 Bxf5 17. Nd5!? Qxb5 18. Nf6+ Ke7 and... I don't see immediate win for white. Maybe Rxd7 followed by Nd5 is better.

On the second look I found this line: 15. ...gxf5 16. exf5 Bxf5 17. Rxd7! Bxd7 18. Bxc6 Qxc6 18. Qxe5+ Qe6 and I had previously missed the obvious fact that the h8 rook hangs. Thanks to the Analysis board :)

Amos, Here is the board after your moves, plus Qxh8.
White is up a pawn at this point, and appears to have a very strong position. It just seemed like there are a lot of other possibilities along the way to consider.

kingdave, I agree, I doubt I would even resign in the position after the 19th move. White is probably winning, but black still has some decent ideas to try, like Bc6, Qg4. He has better coordination after all.
Of course one must consider the fact that white player is rated above 2700, tactical mistakes are not expected so not much of a chance for some cheapo escape.
