I appreciate HAZOP's suggestion. Tie breaks are just the breaks; we have to learn to live with them.
However, even if ties are more likely in a three player round robin, the extra players can be accommodated by then having one, two or three second round groups with four instead of three players. Winner still takes all.
Chances are the third round will have only three players left, but in the unlikely case that there are three ties in the second, that would imply either an extra three-per-group round, or else a four of five-player round. Winner gets the ego boost that belongs to victory. Seems no matter at all...
