Thank you, Richerby! Rereading the section under Help / About This Site confirms you. In the case of my quoted game, the average between (phystutordotcom's rating +400) and my rating would even have been 2095.5, except that my new rating also averaged in all my previous provisional games' outcomes. Gotcha.

After I lost the 'p', my over-1900 rating melted away PDQ. As my rating was overcharged by my lucky win against phys[...], that pumped a lot of extra points into the system. Perhaps this is more inflationary to the level of ratings overall than the isolated cases that like to play much weaker opponents for the one or two points they get out of it.

But I'm sidetracking this thread here...

Several players (not me :^-( ) have been getting freebie points recently. So the best guess is that this is a ripple effect from, say, some bug, or player, being removed from the site, causing automatic reappraisals of ratings over the board?

"Shushpissus. Very shuspissus," the inspector said, without removing his pipe as usual...

I don't think it's helpful to think in these terms. There's no reason that the total number of points in the system should remain constant over time, especially given that the rating of an established player cannot decrease if they play a provisional player.

In any case, on average, new players to the site are going to be of about average ability. There'll be about as many of them who get a lucky win against a stronger player as there will be who get an unlucky loss against a weaker player so everything should balance out over time.

Dave.
