My idea of an ideal endgame tournament:-

Six (or so) players join an all-play-all and each is given a position which would be considered an endgame against each of the other players. 1-game each, 5 games in total. After that, the tournament runs just like any other.

How do you score it? If all the endgame positions are theoretical draws, you might find a lot of players ending up with the same score. If they're not theoretical draws, you'd need to make sure that all the players get the same number of positions that are won for them, and the same number that are lost.

Dave I share your concerns for an endgame turnament. I think we have to introduce luck. The games will be selected from a large collection of endgames randomly. If every player plays many positions. Say 6 players in a round robin and six positions per pairing. Everyone plays 50 positions. On can hope that over 50 positions luck will balance out. The phrase luck will balance out may be foriegn to chess players, but poker players and backgammon players understand that over the long run luck balances out.

It wouldn't be much of a tournament, since there is no programming to support it (that I am aware of) so it ain't going to happen.

I did see a post of yours about fen notation. What's the connection?

Yes, phys has my drift. The idea would not be to play out 'theoretical draws' but to have a number of positions which give chances (maybe) for both sides. Perhaps, you would get each of these positions once as white, once as black. Or some other system - or just luck?

Like I said - some careful and creative thought would need to go into it. So far, this is just off the top of my head.

And someone to put some work in.

And some programming somewhere.

I don't know but is it possible to start a tournament here where the starting position of each game can be specified? Either by a Tournament Director or the players themselves? If so, that's the programming taken care of and the whole idea becomes much more realistic.
