I think gameknot was mentioned here a few months ago, with everyone who posted saying how bad it was. I haven't tried them myself.

Try this freesite:http://www.jeremysilman.com it covers opening. middle game and endgames. Google Eric Schiller books in PDF format. It is free and in depth discussion of selected openings.

Gets a recommendation from me. ;-)

i was playing at www.schemingmind.com before i got to know queen alice. nice site, with a lot of features. in addition to standard chess, they also offer other chess variants, like fischer random, all turn-based. joining is free, but to lead a team or to play more than 20 games concurrently, you have to pay an annual fee. they hold mini-tournaments started by paying members, in which non-paying members can join once every six weeks. they also hold annual drop-out tournaments for standard chess and chess960, some sort of multi-level elimination rounds. no prizes are awarded however, which i find reasonable.

by the way, i created a blog you may wish to populate. its at http://allaboutchess.blogspot.com

thanks
