I think gameknot was mentioned here a few months ago, with everyone who posted saying how bad it was. I haven't tried them myself.

i was playing at www.schemingmind.com before i got to know queen alice. nice site, with a lot of features. in addition to standard chess, they also offer other chess variants, like fischer random, all turn-based. joining is free, but to lead a team or to play more than 20 games concurrently, you have to pay an annual fee. they hold mini-tournaments started by paying members, in which non-paying members can join once every six weeks. they also hold annual drop-out tournaments for standard chess and chess960, some sort of multi-level elimination rounds. no prizes are awarded however, which i find reasonable.
