Track scoring margin rather than wins, losses, and ties!

consider basketball In the closing seconds you are about to score. If you score you win if you dont you lose. But thats no big deal. Wether you win by a point or lose by a point it only affects your scoring margin by 2 points. That shot does not matter any more than your first shot in the next game.

I'm not sure I understand this. If, in scoring that last point the winning team become league champions, how can it not matter? How does it work when a player rating 1700 beats a player rating 2000?

The idea is that the win would count as plus 1. If the team scored 1 more point tha thier oppponent in 20 games but lost one game by 21 that would be -1 on the season. They would rank below a team that did the opposite. Hence they would not be leage champions.
I LIKE OUR CURRENT SYSTEM
In chess you can only outscore your opponent by 1 point so I dont think scoring margin applies to chess. Unless you consider scoring margin to be how many points you win a tournament by. But that is presently how we do things in chess. Winning a tournament 10-0 yields a better ratng that winning 8-2
