the chessboard is set up wrongly

I visited a stately home in England several years ago and in one room was a a large painting by some Dutch Master depicting two old boys playing chess. As the guide gave his talk on what a wonderful painting it was I said it was a pity the artist knew nothing about chess pointing to the black square in the bottom right corner. I received a dirty look and was told, "no one's ever said that before!"
