Hum, I not so clear that I would: Eugene Torre is considered as first asian GM and he's from philippines !! (see the link I give)
And before tittle even exists we can considers that's Sultan Khan from India (but actual Pakistan) was the first one.

A super GM title is given to GMs with ELO >= 2600. Eugene Torre has never surpassed 2600+, so he is not a super GM.

Even the link you mentioned addressed Torre as GM and Mark Paragua as super GM.

This whole thread is all about SUPER GMs.

I think SUPER GM is not given in reality..(not from FIDE!) ;-)
But it has been talked about this in the chess world that SUPER GM is 2600+ as Duncan says but it seems those days that this is only past..!
I belive the chess world nowdays call SUPER GM 2700+! %-)

In other hand, E. Torre won against Karpov and it seem to me that few can do it. 2600 of yesterday is another thing that nowday.

Hi Kouvitch, If title do exist before then Sultan it is. But title do not exists before so we should agree that GM Eugene Torre is the first Asian GM. ;-) And yes, ELO 2600 of yesterday is another thing nowadays. First is breaching the ELO 2600 is very hard and imagine being one of the top 100 in the world if you reach that rating. And second is there are so many stronger players today unlike Sultan's generation. :-) But the question is who is the first Asian "super" GM? Anybody want to share?
