...we already have many players eligible coming from a wide swathe of Asia, I decided to draw the line somewhere. Geographically I guess we should also rule out Australasia and the middle east...

hi popcorn. I think we should also draw the line geographically between Team Philippines and the "Asian" team, so that there's no "grey area" in future recruitment efforts.

The case of "man_from_mars" is different because he actively sought inclusion in your team, although I have a hunch he did so on the wrong impression that he is joining a "continental" team, i.e. will play matches vs. other "continental" teams like maybe Europe, North America, South America, etc.

Your subsequent posts actively recruiting Filipino players is a concern, because this taps into the same pool of players we will have to recruit from in the future. In geographical terms, it can be viewed as "encroaching into our territory". ;-)

Perhaps we can draw a parallel between the Brazilian team and the combined Latin American team. If I'm not mistaken, a conscious effort was made to form the Latin American team without Brazilian players. This way, the pool of players each team can recruit from is mutually exclusive, and hence, leaves no room for future conflicts.

On a positive note, I think there's room for collaboration between our teams. If in some future match, the Asian Team finds itself playing against a "continental" rival, we can perhaps explore using members of the Philippine team as "guest" members for that specific match.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Yes, I must agree with you completely, Duncan! It's just that they DID ask to join...the only problem we might encounter in the near future would be were we two teams to play a match against each other. Originally, I thought we should exclude Philippines players but then a)it appeared we would have trouble finding 16 other Asian players, and b)man from mars asked to join, so I asked one or two who were not engaged in a match with their "home" team to join us. What to do? Maybe now our two Filipino players can be offered space on your team...unless they agree, it seems we will have to "borrow" them until we get more players. I don't really relish playing the "iron fist" and forcibly removing anyone...after all, I'm just an organizer! Any suggestions?

but as the teams here on QA seem to be geographically-delineated, and as we already have many players eligible coming from a wide swathe of Asia, I decided to draw the line somewhere.

Thanks be to God, Chris! I would not like to face a ukrainian reinforcement in the Asian team... ;-)

It really isn't that at all! Our team is likely to be eaten for breakfast by Brasil (or whoever gets organized first!). But we WILL have fun and the team members WILL have something in common. All the other teams ARE geographically-based and there's no reason whatsoever why some of the Europeans cannot get off their duffs and get a team together, even including this mysterious Ukrainian GM if they really yearn to win at all costs!
That said, I'm happy we have so far avoided the complete team chaos on Chessmaniac.com where no inactive team is ever deleted and there are dozens of "teams" with one member, or two...

In order to have better and less anarchic competition I like the idea of geogrphically-based teams. But of course, trade unionists, weekend wife-swappers or people from Jupiter CAN organize their own teams too! :-)
